Shears Academy's October 2022 Achievers 

The Shears Academy Team are truly saddened by the passing of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.

We join all those paying tribute and celebrating her lifetime of service.

• This qualificaiton truly focuses on the needs of today's skilled hair professionals; apprentices will complete a range of higher level learning topics including:

• Research and designing "Fashion-Forward" hairstyles

• Precision cutting tailored to the individual characteristics

• Advanced and imaginative colouring techniques

• Analysing factors which infulence the design and cretion of hairstyles

• Promoting yourself and your work through various media types and platforms

• And will progress to achieve the Level 3 Advanced and Creative Hairdressing Professional qualification.

Despite the long wait due to Lockdown and their EPA bookings being cancelled no less than 3 times, our Achievers took it all in their stride, and were all absolutely brilliant on the day - all passed with flying colours, two with distinctions!

We are very happy that you all feel so safe, the team have been amazing with the Covid-19 Secure procedures, and we thank you all for getting tested each week, before you attend the Academy, to protect yourselves, the team, and all of our families from the risk of spread. Lets all be careful, and take small steps to safely return to being able to get back to our salons.

Schools (including further education) to begin to go back to face-to-face teaching and learning on Mon. 8th March, with salons and barber shops able to re-open Mon. April 12th, all being well of course. To be safe, we all need to remain cautious, taking each (little) step, one at a time. The Academy Training Team are working hard to plan our own step-by-step return to face-to-face training, and then reopening to models & clients to offer services.

Meanwhile, take care of yourselves and others, keep safe, and watch this space for dates/details - we are so excited that we will be seeing you all again very soon!

Apprentice NMW rate: £4.30 per hour for under 19s or in the first year of their apprenticeship

16-17: £4.62 per hour

18-20: £6.56 per hour

21-22: £8.36 per hour

New National Living Wage rate for those 23 + over: £8.91 per hour

The government has extended the employer incentive scheme for hiring a new apprentice. The scheme, which pays up to £3,000 to employers for each new apprentice hired between 1st  August 2020 and 31st January 2021, has been extended to the end of March 2021.

Employers who hire a new apprentice between August 2020 and the end of March 2021 can claim a payment of £2,000 for apprentices aged 16 to 24, and £1,500 for apprentices aged 25 and over. These payments are in addition to the £1,000 employers already receive for hiring an apprentice who is aged 16 to 18 years old (or is under 25 with an education, health and care plan or has been in the care of their local authority).

Employers who take on a new apprentice will receive the incentive payment in two equal instalments, 50% after the apprentice completes three months of their apprenticeship and the remaining 50% after the apprentice completes one year.

To receive the full payment, the apprenticeship must last for at least twelve months.

The payment can be used in any way the employer chooses including, for example, on the apprentice’s salary. However, employers can only apply for the additional payment for new apprentices if they are registered on the government’s digital Apprenticeship Service.

Those who have apprentices making outstanding progress will have been notified - so you know who you are - Congratulations!

We can assure our model clients that all apprentices and assessors will be wearing both masks and visors when working closely with you. "Thank you for your continued custom.

You are all being truly amazing, understanding the need for skin tests prior to colour during this post-covid lockdown period, and happily following all the hygiene and social distancing rules to keep us all safe - "Thank you All!" from the Shears Academy Team  

Call us on 020 8461 3504. If you require a follow-up colour appointment, please ask your stylist for a skin test whilst you are with us.

We promise that our salon is Covid-Secure, which means we have restricted number of clients at any one time and social distancing measures in place, so do please bear with us as you may have a further wait  before you can visit. Please wear your personal mask when attending the salon as disposable masks will be available, but we are eco-aware and aim to keep single-use waste to a minimum, thank you. 

As it is not safe to serve refreshments, please bring your drink in a lidded container and take it home again.

As it is not safe to share magazines, please feel welcome to bring your own and take it home with you.

As we can't safely offer a reception area, please arrive on time, thank you.  

For safety purposes we wish to restrict cash handling and would appreciate it if you could pre-pay for your service by bank transfer. Our bank details are:

We are not yet in a position to open the Shears Academy appointment book yet, as although most salons have now reopened, many need their Apprentices at their own salons for the first week or two.

We will therefore begin taking your bookings just as soon as we know we have enough apprentices to meet demand as we do not wish to disappoint anyone of you.

Huge congrats to all salons who re-opened their doors to clients on Friday or at the weekend!!

We know some of you need your apprentices in the salons full time for the first week or so, so do in get in touch with Tracey from Monday - Wednesdays if you wish to discuss. Meanwhile we are very happy to welcome the priority groups back to the Academy this week. We are pleased to advise we are Covid-19 Secure, with all PPE, social distancing and hygine processes in place.

We sincerely hope you are all keeping safe and well.

The Shears Academy Team are preparing plans for returning to the Academy as soon as the government confirm it is safe to do so.

In line with the first salons opening on Saturday July 4th, we plan to re-open to Apprentices week commencing Monday 6th July with full Social Distance Secure measures in place to ensure the highest levels of safety for our team and apprentices. WE WILL NOT BE BOOKING IN MODEL CLIENTS AT THIS TIME, but Group A and C apprentices will be working on Training Heads and Group A and C on completeing all paper-based work, and theory.

The government is encouroughing everyone to avoid using public transport if at all possible. Therefore we have gathered information from Apprentices to enable us to Risk Assess their prospective journeys whilst attending Shears Academy. 

Priority will be given to those apprentices that are due to take EPA in June and August, and also those apprentices that have found difficulty in participating in online learning delivery. 

Employers: We will be contacting  you over the next week to discuss your apprentice's return to face to face training with us., meanwhile if you have any queries at this particular time, please email us on and we will get back to you.
